Jamland Story - By Anthony Short
Brisbane 1995 - In the beginning, there was a jam. And then another, and another, and another.....There was an electric guitar, a bass guitar, some drums and a microphone. That was back in 1995, a covers band, jamming it out in prep for two shows, to serve as a parting gift for myself, who was about to go to London on a long working holiday.
That first band was quickly named Earth.....a quick rip-off of one of Bruce Springsteen's first bands, and my personal favourite musician of all.
Earth was Steve Rudken - Electric Guitar, Bret Neilson - Drums; Jeff Schmiede - Bass Guitar and Anthony Short - Vocals. Our version of Earth started a fire inside that cannot be extinguished.
So Europe was to be the opportunity to get a guitar and learn it - slowly. My mates Wyn and Dan, my travel compadres in a purple combi-van nicknamed Milka, after our shared great mate (there but not there).....I started out learning the ropes of a whole range of different cover songs....Springsteen, The Beatles, U2, Pearl Jam, ACDC, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, Oasis....the list goes on. Thankfully, both Wyn and Dan were happy drivers, though not necessarily happy listeners. But in the Milka Combi-Van, I taught myself how to play other peoples songs on guitar.
Returning to Australia in 1998, and with some cover songs known and understood, I decided to try and tap into creating some of my own songs. From there, I spent a good decade writing, recording and playing solo, with only the occasional opportunity to jam it out with a few like minded individuals.
In 1999 I was living in Sydney, and musical compadres were hard to find. A special mention must go to Paul Ansell & Matty Ross, who loved to rock together on acoustic guitar, and who helped to keep the fire burning for me at that mastering debating time of solo-ness. You guys taught me the greatest lesson in music - how great it is to play music together with someone else - a like minded individual.
So in 2007, and with a family move from Sydney to Brisbane, the need for drums, guitars and musical compadres was growing strong. Brisbane, my home town. My favourite place on the Earth.....And into a house with a shed........thanks God, whatever your name..........Jamland was born.
Jamland is a place for like-minded individuals to make live recorded music. Jamland is a place to escape for just a little while, and then come back to escape again and again. And it is definitely a place for rebirth, it's never the same, it's always different. Just like A, B, C, D, E, F, G.........
For me, Jamland is proof that we all need someone else; plus, plus someone else, to keep the fire burning, and to make crap from good to better to great one day.
Thanks, Appreciation & Gratitude Always Goes To The Jamland Players.
